Railroad History of Dalton
Dalton and Whitfield County are great for railfans who like to watch and photograph trains!

Dalton is the only place
in Georgia outside of Atlanta
(so we're told by railfans)
where two different rails lines
converge and run side by side:
CSX and Norfolk-Southern.
The area by the 1914 Norfolk-Southern depot just of E. Morris Street in downtown is a great place to set up your camera and capture image of these modern machines.
Directions to Downtown: I-75, Exit 333, Walnut Avenue east 2.3 miles, left on Thornton Avenue, .5 miles then right on E. Morris Street, .5 miles to railroad.
The CSX rail runs from Dalton through Tunnel Hill just 8 miles north. Here the trains must pass through the tunnel in Chettoogeta Mountain. The
Tunnel Hill Heritage Center and Historic Western and Atlantic RR Tunnel are also located at this site. Due to the large volume of traffic along this line, trains are often sitting on the side rail waiting for clearance.
Directions from Dalton: I-75, Exit 336, Hwy. 41 north 4.5 miles, right on Oak Street just before crossing the bridge over the tracks, straight ahead 1/4 mile.
