African-American Heritage

The Emery Center, site of Dalton's first public school building, was built in 1886 to address the educational needs of African-American children between the ages of seven and sixteen. The school served the communities of Dalton and surrounding counties. Now preserved as an African-American heritage site, the Emery Center serves as a museum and multicultural center.

Annual events include:

  • Theatre Production (Nov.)
  • Holiday Fundraiser Social (Dec.)

    Roland Hayes, son of a slave, the first African-American classical singer to have an international career on the concert and operatic stage, was born in Calhoun, GA, in 1887, just 20 miles south of Dalton. He lived until 1977.

    Visitors can view the museum's photographs and memorabilia, listen to Roland Hayes' music, and see a video about his life. Guided tours are available to groups and individuals by appointment. Information is presented at the appropriate grade level for school groups, and teacher guides are available.
